Neurological Pain Syndrome
RSD & CRPS
Neurological disturbances result in many different symptoms, one of which is physical pain. Nearly two years ago, after suffering an injury to his ankle, seven-year-old Ryan was brought to me after his parents had exhausted traditional medical avenues for relief from his debilitating pain. He had initially been treated in a clinic for the injury and subsequently pronounced healed, but continued to suffer excruciating pain and had little to no mobility in his ankle. After seeing a number of doctors, they were eventually given a diagnosis of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
RSD/CRPS is a chronic neurological condition that can occur after a broken bone, sprain or other injury. It can also be triggered by surgery, illness, disease or certain medications. In many instances, there is no known trigger. It typically initially affects the hands, arms, legs or feet, can spread to the opposite extremity, and over time can progress to irreversible changes to skin and bone, increasingly intense pain, weakness, swelling and severely limited mobility.
In this syndrome, while an injury or condition may appear to heal appropriately, the normal healing process has been altered due to unusual stimulation of nerve tissue. Not recognizing that healing has occurred, the sympathetic nervous system begins sending abnormal impulses and extreme pain messages along the nerve pathways. Symptoms of this syndrome include the following:
- Intense burning pain
- Increased skin sensitivity
- Changes in skin temperature, color and texture
- Joint swelling and stiffness
- Changes in nails and hair
- Decreased mobility
Ryan primarily experienced severe burning pain and limitation of mobility, had been using crutches and arrived for his session wearing an ankle brace.
Holistic Treatment of RSD & CRPS
Traditional treatment focuses on relieving painful symptoms. However, treating this incapacitating pain from an intuitive holistic healing perspective entailed focusing on releasing the physical pain along with reprogramming the sympathetic nervous system to stop the progression of the syndrome. Some empathic healers have the ability to feel, absorb and transfer pain from the client through their own bodies, and while this experience is a regular occurrence in my sessions, the pain emanating from Ryan’s ankle was exceptionally excruciating. In fact, after seeing hundreds of clients and nearly two years later, this one session continues to stand out for the intensity of the pain involved.
As I worked to release Ryan’s physical pain, it was also necessary to work intuitively to correct the abnormal function of the nervous system. Thorough restructuring of the affected area was accomplished by energetic healing and communication, resulting in an immediate cessation of the pain messages that had been relentlessly sent along his nerve pathways. Using a holistic approach and taking into account the mind-body connection, full healing was accomplished.
The following is excerpted from a letter I received from Ryan’s parents following his session (the complete letter can be found here).
“Our son, Ryan, had not touched his foot to the floor in over five weeks. He was in pain, frustrated and truly miserable. After several doctor visits, medications and sleepless nights, we turned to you for some temporary relief. Instead, we got a miracle. After only 45 minutes, Ryan got up and WALKED away from your table. More importantly, he was treated as a WHOLE person. Your kind, gentle approach helped him feel at ease and gave him the space and place to truly open up to the healing that you facilitate. He was so thrilled with his experience that when we left the first thing he said was “I want to do that again!!” (He never said that after a doctor visit!!) It was amazing to see him pain free and happy so quickly. We are truly grateful for your healing powers and for the energy and light you helped restore in our son.
Lisa and Dave Cook”
